Chiefs upend Eagles in CVAC boys' basketball

SARANAC — Saranac coach Brent Denis liked what he saw from his team Wednesday night.

The Chiefs (9-5, 8-4) played one of their best games of the season in a 61-48 victory over Beekmantown in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys’ basketball.

Saranac limited Eagles’ star Keegan Ryan to 11 points, including two fields goals in the first three quarters.

“It was a great win for us and I can’t be more proud of the team,” said Denis. “I know it’s a cliché, but it was a team effort. We had several players with stellar performances.

“We played a great game — an unselfish one.”

John Maye led the Chiefs with 17 points, while Tanner Rascoe finished with 11 points, six assists and five steals, Jeremy Bullis 10 points and eight rebounds, and Michael Conway eight points.

“Maye shot 8-of-12 from the field,” said Denis. “He creates shots for himself and is a natural scorer.

“Rascoe had a strong all-around game. He had only one turnover and we had only six as a team.”

Tyler Begor paced the Eagles with 15 points, while Greg Manney added 12 and Ryan, 11.

Bullis worked hard in defending Ryan.

“I think Keegan and Jeremy have a respect for one another,” said Denis. “Bullis is a hard worker who takes pride in a big challenge.

“But Jeremy had help. He did his best to deny Keegan the ball and when Ryan did get the ball, we had other players coming to help out.”

The Chiefs jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter, held a 27-14 advantage at the half and a 41-24 edge after three.

The Eagles had a 24-20 scoring advantage in a high-scoring fourth quarter.
