---- — CROWN POINT — Crown Point’s new town budget stays under the state’s 2 percent tax-levy cap.
The $1.84 million budget for 2013 has an $877,000 tax levy that is only 1.8 percent higher than this year, Town Supervisor Charles Harrington said.
“I think we aced it,” he said. “We stayed under the cap. It was a well-concerted effort.”
The public hearing on the proposed 2013 budget is at 5:45 tonight at the Crown Point Town Hall.
The total tax levy, with the Fire District figured in, is $1.07 million. The Fire District is not used for purposes of calculating the tax cap.
The Crown Point Fire District tax rate will be $1.40 per $1,000 of assessment, for a $200,800 tax levy, about the same as this year, which is included in the total budget. The district has a Board of Fire Commissioners that sets its own budget.
The tentative town tax rate, including the Fire District, would be $9.17 per $1,000 of assessed property value inside the town water district, compared with $9.05 now.
The owner of a property assessed at $50,000 in the town Water District would pay $458 in town taxes, compared with $452 this year.
Outside the Water District, the tax rate would be $7.28, up from $7.20 this year. The owner of a $50,000 home outside the district would pay $364 in town taxes, against $360 for 2012.
Health insurance went from about $134,000 to $150,000 in the budget. State Retirement System costs are up about 15 percent.
Employees and elected officials are in the budget for 2 percent raises.
“We had some things go our way,” Harrington said. “We’re a frugal lot to begin with.”
Councilman Thomas Walters said the Town Council worked to keep spending down.
“We’re in fairly good shape,” he said. “We were able to keep things under control. Expenses go up for everybody.”
Harrington praised town workers for helping hold the line.
“We have good employees in a trusting environment. You have that, and you have success.”
