Highway crews prepared for Pax

PLATTSBURGH — With winter storm Pax on its way, North Country municipalities stand ready.

It has been a taxing winter, with numerous ice and snow storms blowing through the region, straining municipal resources.

But Chateaugay Supervisor Donald Bilow said his town is prepared for whatever weather they may experience in the coming days.

“We have four trucks,” he said Wednesday. “They are loaded and ready to go.”

WINTRY MIX

Pax is expected to hit the Adirondack region early this afternoon.

Area residents can expect a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that could continue until Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Burlington.

Even with clear roads, drivers are advised to tread carefully, as visibility will be low, especially tonight, when it might get to below a half mile.

Wind speed could range from 5 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph.

STOCKED UP

Some towns had been running low on the sand and salt used to combat slippery roads.

“We had to replenish everything, but we’re all set and ready,” Ticonderoga Highway Superintendent Michael Parent said. “We are doing good right now.”

The situation was similar in several Clinton County towns.

Altona Highway Superintendent Frederick Therrian said they are set in terms of salt and sand supply.

Saranac Highway Superintendent Leo Vann said the town has used up quite a lot of its salt and sand but should be fine until the end of the season.

“We are holding our own over here,” he said.

CHALLENGE POSTPONED

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Winter Challenge, planned for today in Lake Placid, has been postponed due to the approaching storm.

He had planned to bring state officials to the North Country for what he dubbed a “Celebration of Tourism.” Teams of local leaders were prepared to defend their territory on the ski slopes, bobsled run and other venues.

The event will be rescheduled for a later date, according to the Governor’s Office.
