Cards end regular season with a tie

CANTON — The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 overtime tie with St. Lawrence University in nonconference play Wednesday afternoon.

Pat Shaughnessy's second-half goal pulled the Cardinals even in what was their final regular season game.

It could have been worse, however.

"We were set up for more things to go wrong than right," said Plattsburgh State head coach Chris Waterbury. "We left several players — significant players — behind because of injuries and illness. And we had some players who weren't at 100 percent.

"We didn't play a great game, but I couldn't be more proud of the effort. We had several freshmen playing out of their roles and they battled."

Shaughnessy pulled the Cardinals (12-2-4) even when he scored on a breakaway 13:00 into the second half. He split two defenders and sent the ball inside the far post.

"Our leaders challenged the other players at the half, and we came back to tie it on a great play," Waterbury said. "(John) LoGuirato was playing his first real minutes after coming back from an injury. He won a head ball at midfield and flighted it to Shaughnessy."

The Saints (7-6-1) took a 1-0 lead 13:16 into the contest when freshman Sam DeMello sent a 20-yard shot into the lower left-hand corner of the net.

"We got manhandled in the first half," Waterbury said. "We couldn't get it going, and it was a miracle that we were only down 1-0. We struggled and couldn't get into the flow.

"It was very difficult field conditions for both teams and it was flat-out cold at 40 degrees."

Both teams had good scoring chances in regulation and in overtime.

"Defenders on both teams were struggling to defend because of the conditions and there were a lot of shots," Waterbury said. "Both teams had multiple chances to win it in regulation.

"We were trying hard to win it in regulation because I didn't think we would have anything left in our tanks in overtime. Their best opportunity in overtime came when Brendan Gorman took a great shot that went off the post. Andy (Heighington) dove for it, but I don't know if he would have been able to get to it if the shot had been inside the post.

"And less than two minutes later, Joe Bogart had a header from three yards out that went right into their keeper."

Heighington made seven saves for the Cardinals and Nate Goss-Woliner nine stops for the Saints, who finished with a 28-21 edge in shots.

Plattsburgh State is off until it hosts the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals and finals on November 6-7.

"We're going to give the guys tomorrow off and let them get away from soccer for a while," Waterbury said.
