CHAZY — Former Chazy Councilor Richard West has returned to the Town Council for 2013.
West was recently appointed to fill the vacancy left by Christopher Latremore, who resigned from the council to take office as elected town justice.
Chazy Town Supervisor Staub Spiegel said officials appointed West to the council rather than leave the position vacant, based on his experience in the post after having served as an elected councilor about a decade ago.
West’s appointment took effect immediately and will last until Dec. 31, the remainder of Latremore’s term.
The position will be one of several opening this fall, when current terms expire.
“It’s going to be a big year in this year’s election,” Spiegel said. “There’s a number of positions opening up.”
In other action at recent meetings, town minutes show:
Appointments: Spiegel appointed Councilor Jerry Deno as deputy supervisor, and Town Clerk Leo Oliver was approved as town budget officer.
Town Historian Robert Cheeseman accepted reappointment to his position, while Thomas Tetreault was approved as the returning Chazy Youth Commission chairperson.
Chazy Fire Chief Michael Cahoon and West Chazy Fire Chief Kevin Gerard were approved as fire wardens for their districts.
Plowing: Councilors applauded Highway Department personnel for their quick responses in clearing area roadways during recent snowstorms.
Spiegel encouraged all property and business owners to keep sidewalks free of snow in the next few months.
Paving: Councilors amended policy to require that roadways be paved before being accepted as town roads.
Next meeting: The next regular meeting of Chazy Town Council will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at the Town Hall.
