Lawrence K. "Larry" Northup Jr.

MINEVILLE — Lawrence K. "Larry" Northup Jr., 82, of the Bartlett Pond Road, Mineville, died Friday, April 19, 2013, at his home.

He was born in Plattsburgh, Dec. 27, 1930, son of Lawrence K. Sr. and Beatrice (Hughes) Northup.

Larry graduated from St. John's Academy in Plattsburgh and then joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. It was there that he met and married his beloved wife Makiko. After returning to the U.S. he received his teaching degree from Plattsburgh State University. Upon graduation he moved to Mineville and became a 6th grade teacher. When the district centralized he became the elementary school principal of Moriah Central School and then later completed his career as the District Superintendent.

Throughout his life he took enjoyment from becoming an avid woodworker and completed many home improvement projects for himself and others. He raised Irish Setters for many years and showed a couple of them to become champion show dogs. In his later years he enjoyed the companionship of three rescued greyhound racing dogs.

During the last several years, Larry took pleasure in dining out frequently, especially his breakfasts at several local restaurants. He made many friends on these outings and they added much enjoyment to his days. Of course on these outings he took great pleasure in stopping to purchase and trying his luck with many scratch lottery tickets. Larry lived life well and was loved by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his three sons, James Northup of Bristol, Vt., John Northup and his wife Terri of Mineville, and Michael Northup and his partner Jeffrey Dodge of Peru; his much loved grandchildren, Jamie Northup of Albany, Tyler Northup and his girlfriend Amanda Breeyear of Mineville, Tico Brighton and his mother Deb Brighton of Salisbury, Vt.; and his greyhound, Annie.
