PLATTSBURGH — In front of a large group of supporters, the Plattsburgh State women’s cross country team ran to a second-place finish at the Cardinal Classic on Saturday morning. The Cardinals only home meet of 2013 was held outside of the Field House Complex on the campus of Plattsburgh State University.
Senior standout Kelley Driscoll led the Cardinals by posting a second-place finish in a time of 18:35. She was bested only by St. Lawrence’s Ariel Beccia who traversed the five-kilometer course in a time of 18:18.
The Saints took home the team title by amassing 22 points. Plattsburgh State collected 37 points during the race.
Not far behind Driscoll was Katie Ehmann who continued her strong start to the 2013 season with a fourth-place finish in a time of 19:23. Freshman Lauren Perschetz closed out the trio of Cardinals in the top ten by producing a 10th-place finish of 20:31.
Sophomore Megan Schweizer (12th) crossed the finish line in 21:01. The freshman duo of Morgan Deming and Michelle Collins paced each other through the course of the race and finished in 18th (21:47) and 19th (21:51) respectively. Tiffani Love rounded out the contingent of point-producing Cardinals by posting a 24th-place finish in a time of 22:20.
Also on the course were former Plattsburgh State cross country greats Allison Deshane and the recently-graduated Amanda Schermerhorn. Deshane recorded an eighth-place finish in 19:57 while Schermerhorn found herself just outside the top ten and cruised to the finish in an 11th-place time of 20:39.
Men finish second
With some of their alumni base competing with them, the men’s recorded a second-place finish.
For the second time in as many weeks, freshman Ethan Vinson was the man to beat among the Plattsburgh State bunch. Vinson was clocked in a 13th-place time of 16:26.
Scott Smolensky of St. Lawrence took the individual crown with a first-place time of 15:40. The Saints took the team championship by racking up just 15 points.
The next duo of finishers for the Cardinals included sophomore Zack Rose (19th, 16:53) and junior Brendan Connor (20th, 16;56).
Not far behind them was sophomore Jason Flach who crossed the finish line in a 22nd-place time of 17:13. Llaney Hernandez was one spot behind Flach, and needed 17:17 to complete the five-kilometer course.
Joe Nichols (30th, 17:43) and Christopher Scarallo (33rd, 17:48) rounded out the group of Plattsburgh State student-athletes who earned points toward the team score.
Members of Plattsburgh State’s vast alumni group joined the field with Mike Schram posting a ninth-place finish in a time of 16:10. Seth Yernye was hot on Schram’s heels, and trekked through the course in a 10th-place time of 16:19.
Former Cardinal All-American Matt Deshane made an appearance on the trails as well, and cruised to a 16th-place finish in 16:49. Robert Grim (18th, 16:52) was the final member of the alumni team to finish in the top 20.
Past Plattsburgh State student-athletes Chris Martin, James Biondi, Brian Wilson, Ben Jackson and Pete Kaplan all laced up their running shoes and competed in the race as well.
Plattsburgh State will head west next weekend to take part in the Oneonta Early Bird Invitational hosted by Oneonta State. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14.
