10 YEARS AGO (2003)

Plattsburgh State opens Chip Cummings Field with a 6-4, 8-6 sweep of SUNY Oneonta. David Waldron and Mike Bergman are the winning pitchers while Waldron leads the offense.

Lake Placid’s Barbara Kelly, 75, earns a Level 4 bronze medal at the U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships.

Champlain’s Barb Boyer sets 2 national records at the National Masters Weightlifting Championships.

Clinton Community College’s Amanda Deyoe pitches both ends of a 9-1, 5-4 doubleheader sweep of North Country CC, allowing just 10 hits in 12 innings. Kaila Spooner, Emily Colby, Nicole Devins, Brandi Patnode and Deyoe are the hitting stars while Erike Zapp leads NCCC.

Tracey Mitchell strikes out a school-record 13 in Plattsburgh State’s 5-0 victory over Fredonia in softball.

20 YEARS AGO (1993)

Bruce Schroeder and tourney MVP Tom Heurter score 26 points apiece to lead Little Caesar’s past defending champion Keith Rhodes Associates, 104-81, in the final of the 27th PBA Basketball Tournament. Leroy Witherspoon adds 17 points and 8 assists. Lee Matthews of Little Caesar’s, Darwin Carr of Keith Rhodes and Mike Lobus and Rod Willingham of the Vermont All-Stars round out the first all-tournament team.

Plattsburgh State’s Alicia LaValley winds up the leader in NCAA Div. III women’s basketball in steals per game, averaging 6.2 a contest. She finishes with 149 for 24 games, including 12 against Oswego.

25 YEARS AGO (1988)

Hockey standout Joey Ferras and cross-country and track star Sue Hutchins are recognized as Plattsburgh State Athletes of the Year.

Lake Placid native Ed Seney, 28, is named the first full-time hockey coach at SUNY Potsdam.

Lara Froehlich wins the long jump, triple jump, 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash to lead Peru to a season-opening victory over Plattsburgh High.

Winning pitcher Faith Miller helps her cause with 4 hits, including a 3-run homer, in Beekmantown’s victory over AuSable Valley in softball.
