PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Elks Senior Babe Ruth team opened its season on Saturday on a positive note with a 3-1 win over Georgia, Vt. at Lefty Wilson Field.
Georgia opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the first inning.
The Elks, however, rallied in the second by scoring all three of its runs. Durgan Zappala walked and Garrett Manchester followed with an RBI triple to tie the game. After Austin Medeiros rapped a sacrifice fly to give Plattsburgh the lead, walks to Rob Hartman, Jonas Miller, Andrew Tedford and Kyle Erickson produced the final run.
Plattsburgh’s Nate Emery was the lone player in the game with two hits. Manchester and Andrew Tedford had the other hits for Plattsburgh.
The Elks used four pitchers. Medeiros went the first three, striking out five and walking two. Miller then went the next two, striking out six and walking one, to pick up the win in relief. Manchester and Greg Manney closed it out, with Manney recording the save.
“Our pitchers were very sharp for not having played in over a month,” Plattsburgh coach Jim Manchester said. “Medeiros and Miller threw hard and dominated a line-up from Georgia that was missing a few key players. Manchester and Manney pitched to contact and were effective to close out the game.
“Our hitting was not as good as it could be, but again was probably due to our players not seeing live pitching in over a month.”
The Elks had four hits, while Brad Pomitcher, Jordan Clark and Kyle Maskell accounted for the Georgia hits.
