The Bagel Pit opens downtown

PLATTSBURGH — Bagels and more are in store at a downtown restaurant that recently reopened with new owners.

Brittany and Ashley Taylor opened The Bagel Pit on March 8 in the former Baxter’s Bagels space at 22 Brinkerhoff St. 

“It’s been going very well,” Ashley said. “We have a bunch of regulars from Baxter’s, but a bunch of new faces as well.”


She worked at Baxter’s for about seven months and was approached by the owner when he thought about selling the business. Ashley said she and Brittany had always wanted to own their own business and eventually decided to take the plunge.

They are adding their own touches to the shop, with a goal to create a cozy, relaxed vibe typical of a college-town cafe. They made renovations to the kitchen and added more space at the tables.

Another new touch is the large chalkboard menu wall. Customers can also enjoy the free Wi-Fi service.

While they kept a lot of the Baxter’s menu, they have made some changes.

Bagel pizzas are among the new items on the menu. Choices include cheese, pepperoni, three meat or hot ham and cheese.

On the breakfast menu, the Hangover Takeover has proven popular so far, Ashley said. It features two fried eggs, cream cheese, bacon and ketchup on a bagel, with the French toast bagel recommended.

At lunch, the Artiste has also been a big seller, Ashley said. It includes sprouts, lettuce, tomato, onion, bell peppers, cucumber and Italian dressing.

One holdover is The Baxter, named after the former owner’s dog. It is made with smoked ham, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and dijon mustard.

The Taylors’ pets served as inspiration for the names of some other menu items.

One is the Lincoln, named after Brittany’s pit bull. It features chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheddar and ranch.
