Furniture and Decor now open in downtown Plattsurgh

PLATTSBURGH — A new business in downtown Plattsburgh is one place to find affordable, one-of-a-kind home furnishings.

Furniture and Decor opened April 1 at 2 Margaret St. on the corner of Broad Street. General Manager Arthur Slate said business has been good in the early going.

“Our walk-by traffic has been good,” he said. “Weekends have been busier.”

Many people have stopped by to share stories of when the building housed a J.C. Penney store.

Slate said the focus is on good-quality, solid pieces of furniture.

“We get a lot of different tastes,” he said. “You get anything from modern contemporary to antique Victorian all housed in one building.”

Furniture and Decor is a “group” furniture shop, Slate said. A number of different vendors rent space by the month and set up displays of their wares within the store.

He said there is room for about 30 vendors on the main floor and spaces are available. There is room for about another 30 spaces on the lower level if needed, he said.

Furniture and Decor also accepts single items on consignment. Slate has received 30 to 35 pieces in the last couple days, and more are expected soon.

Midweek, one area had a variety of rockers, coffee tables and desks in contemporary styles. Nearby was a selection of antique furniture, lamps and accessories.

“They are really affordable for what they are,” Slate said, adding they would be great for someone looking to redecorate their home.

There was even a player piano on display. Several rugs are available.

Slate said he is keeping an eye out for chandeliers, as has had multiple requests for those.

In addition to furniture, there are smaller items such as plates and jewelry.

A plantation desk on display in the front window is one of his favorite pieces, Slate said. There is also a suit of armor in another front window display.
