PHS captures sectional title, records fall

CLINTONVILLE — Plattsburgh won eight out of a possible 11 events, and in the process broke a pair of records, to capture the Section VII/X boys’ swimming meet Saturday held at AuSable Valley High School.

The Hornets, who totaled 416 points, defeated second-place Franklin Academy (294) and third-place AuSable Valley (256).

Nate Leopard and Matt Evans were the big winners on the afternoon for Plattsburgh with three wins apiece.

Evans and Leopard joined Nick Prenoveau and Mike Torner to capture the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:34.25 to break the Section VII record, which was set by the same group a year ago with a time of 1:34.39. The time also breaks the Plattsburgh, pool and meet records.

Evans then broke the pool record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.58. The previous record was held by Evans, who set it a month ago with a time of 22.80.

Evans’ third victory on the afternoon came in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.44. Leopard added a win in the 200 freestyle (2:00.20) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:41.99) with Prenoveau, Josh Labounty and Robbie Hartman.

Austin Spooner, Nathan Emery and Prenoveau were each two-time winners on the day.

Spooner and Emery were joined by Jeremy Carpenter and Spencer Hall to capture first in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:55.62. Spooner took first in the 100 backstroke (1:04.31), while Emery touched first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.68).

The Patriots took third in the meet, but captured first in three events.

Hank McCormick led AuSable Valley with a first-place finish in both the 200 individual medley (2:15.04) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.81). Gavin Friedrich finished first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:38.28.

The Huskies managed to take second in the meet despite not having a first-place finisher. Aaron Moore paced Franklin Academy with a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:07.88. The relay team of Conor
