— Vermont grazing specialist to speak at meetings
CHATEAUGAY — The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Northern New York Livestock Team and the Adirondack North Country Association are hosting 2013 North Country Pasture Meetings with guest speaker Jenn Colby, a grazing specialist and Pasture Program coordinator with the University of Vermont Center for Sustainability.
Colby, who raises sheep, pigs and poultry, will speak about grazing practices in Vermont and her current projects that involve pasturing techniques.
A meeting is set for Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chateaugay Knights of Columbus, Route 374, Chateaugay. The cost is $30 per person, $5 for additional people from same farm, and the fee includes lunch sponsored by Feed Commodities Inc. of Malone. The program agenda includes information from Northern New York farm fields with either Agronomy Educator Mike Hunter of Cornell Cooperative Extension Jefferson County or Joe Lawrence of McClelland Agronomic Services discussing how the drought conditions of 2012 will affect pasture productivity in 2013 and the results of the Northern New York on-farm pasture nitrogen research trials.
The all-day program also includes Trish Decosse of the Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District presenting programs of interest to grazers, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Clinton County Agricultural Program Educator Peter Hagar providing information on pasture and forage insurance and Joe Orefice of North Branch Farm in Saranac and Paul Smiths College with an introduction to silvaculture, the grazing of livestock in wooded areas, and silvaculture opportunities in the Adirondacks.
Breakout sessions will also be held with grass-based dairy farmer Bob Zufall of Lisbon; Hugh Sutherland who operates a 700-sheep farm in Huntingdon, Quebec; and local beef backgrounders.

Crop Congress to be held at Miner Institute
CHAZY — The William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute will host its annual Crop Congress event Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Dairy farmers and agribusiness professionals are encouraged to attend this educational event.
The doors will open at 9:30 a.m. for the opportunity to visit with a variety of agribusiness representatives and view their exhibits. The speakers program will begin at 10 a.m. Dr. Russ Hahn from Cornell University will present his latest corn herbicide research data and provide many new weed control updates.
Dr. Bill Cox from Cornell University will present information about new corn hybrids, including BT traits and the importance of Insect Resistance Management to preserve the effectiveness of these technologies. Dr. Randy Shaver from the University of Wisconsin-Madison will present information about corn shredlage, a new processed corn silage that may change the way dairy producers feed their cattle to maximize production.
Crop Congress is organized in collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension and is open to the public at no charge, with no advance registration required. Lunch is available for $5.
Pesticide applicator credits for New York and Vermont will be available.

Farm and Chef Meeting to be held Feb. 13
PLATTSBURGH — Chefs and farmers are invited to come and learn how to benefit from the “buy local” movement as interest continues to grow in locally grown food in local restaurants.
Attendees are invited to join the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, Adirondack Harvest and the Cornell Cooperative Extension as farmers, producers and chefs from around the region gather for a morning of discussion and creating contacts for the 2013 season.
The Farm and Chef Meeting will be held Feb. 13 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Butcher Block’s new banquet room, 15 Booth Drive, Plattsburgh.
Ward Lumber to host Equine Night
JAY — Ward Lumber is hosting a free Equine Night on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for equine enthusiasts.
Seminar topics include the economics of feeding horses (hay, grain and supplements), the value of horse feed and places that money is wasted, meeting the nutritional requirements for horses that cannot eat forage i.e. senior horse, and the role of protein in diet — how protein and fat work together. There will also be a question-and-answer session.
The guest speaker is Dr. Stephen Duren, a native of Soda Springs, Idaho. He completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Sciences at the University of Idaho and earned a Master of Science Degree and Doctor of Philosophy in Equine Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from the University of Kentucky. Duren, a former consulting equine nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research of Versailles, Ky., has formed his own company, Performance Horse Nutrition LLC, and consults with horse owners throughout the world.
Duren is also the co-author of the book “The Concise Guide to Nutrition In The Horse” and has consulted with horse owners world-wide including Australia, Japan, Canada and United Arab Emirates.
