Seminar on raising chickens for beginners offered

PLATTSBURGH — Cornell Cooperative Extension Clinton County is hosting a workshop for anyone interested in raising chickens for pleasure or profit, eggs or meat, one to 1,000, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. 

Topics will include the basics of chicken husbandry, housing, nutrition and related subjects. The workshop has a $5 registration fee. It will be presented at the Extension office, 6064 Route 22, Plattsburgh.

Corn and soybean IPM workshops scheduled

CHAZY — Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton and Essex Counties will jointly offer Corn and Soybean Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Workshops March 27 at Miner Institute in Chazy and March 28 at the St. Lawrence County Extension Learning Farm in Canton. The workshops will begin at 10:30 a.m and conclude at 3 p.m.

The morning session will include the following topics on Corn IPM: Walking the Fields with Dr. Kitty O’Neil, CCE crops and soils specialist; Foliar Diseases with Cornell University Plant Pathologist Dr. Gary Bergstrom and Dr. Kitty O’Neil; and Corn Weeds and Bugs with Mike Hunter, field crops specialist with CCE of Jefferson and Lewis counties.

Afternoon topics focus on Soybean IPM and include Walking the Fields with Dr. Kitty O’Neil, Soybean Diseases with Dr. Gary Bergstrom and Dr. Kitty O’Neil; and Soybean Weeds and Bugs with Mike Hunter.

The $10 workshop fee does not include lunch. Miner Institute offers a hot lunch for $5; several lunch options are within 2.5 miles of the CCE St. Lawrence Learning Farm. To register for either location, contact CCE St. Lawrence at 315-379-9192.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and CCA credits are pending approval. Attendees must arrive on time and stay for the entire corn or soybean program to receive these credits. Pesticide sign-in rosters will be available only during registration just prior to each workshop. Certificates will be distributed at the end of each program.
