PSU drops first game in lacrosse

---- — FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team dominated everywhere except the scoreboard Saturday.

The nationally-ranked Cardinals dropped their first game of the season when the University of Mary Washington recorded a 12-8 victory in non-conference play.

Plattsburgh (7-1) held a 48-30 shot advantage, a 40-29 edge in ground balls, and Mary Washington turned the ball over 19 times as compared to the Cardinals’ 11.

But Zack Del grosso was a difference in net for the Eagles with 20 saves. Plattsburgh held a 24-19 edge in shots in the first half and a 24-11 margin in the second stanza.

Joey Marson led the Eagles (6-2) with three goals and three assists, while John Bohlinger and Billy Kelly added three goals apiece. Sean Dacey finished with two goals and an assist.

Brendan Damm paced Plattsburgh with two goals and an assist, and Joey Kramer added a goal and two assists.

Ryan Hastings, Brett McClelland, Anthony Pafundi, Nick Travers and Tom Duggan each scored once for the Cardinals.

The first period went back-and-forth as the two teams battled to a 4-all standoff after one.

But Mary Washington gained the upper hand in the second period, with Marson, Bohlinger, Dacey and Kelly all scoring, sandwiched around a goal by the Cardinals’ Travers, to take an 8-5 lead into intermission.

Duggan’s goal early in the third brought the Cardinals to within 8-6, but the Eagles opened it up on goals by Marson, Dacey and Kelly to make it 11-6 before settling for a 12-7 lead after three.

The Cardinals scored the lone goal in the fourth period.

Gordie Gehring played 51:05 in net for Plattsburgh and made eight saves.

Neither team scored in man-up opportunities, with the Cardinals going 0-for-4 and the Eagles, 0-for-6.

The Cardinals, who have been on the road for six of their eight games thus far, return home for a 4 p.m. non-conference game against Clarkson on Wednesday.

SUNY Athletic Conference power Cortland is then in town for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday.
