MALONE — When the Huskies played in Massena earlier this season, the game was a nail-biter down to the final seconds as Franklin Academy won 20-17 without the services of several players.

Saturday, the entire team was ready to play in the Class A title game that took place on the Malone field and the Green and White came away with a 42-20 win with once again showing their ability to make the big play.

The Huskies never trailed in the game as they marched down the field on the first drive of the game, going 92 yards in eight plays with the big play being a 22-yard pickup by Taylor Hilyard. The touchdown came when Jake Gravel found Chris Picaro on a post play for a 42-yard play. Gravel kicked the first of six extra points on the day.

The Red Raiders went on a long drive of their own after Antranig Almasian recoved a Huskie fumble on the Raider 48 yard line on a fourth down play. The 15-play drive which included three straight third down conversions was capped in the second quarter by a 2-yard run by Evan Raymo. The extra point was blocked to keep the score at 7-6.

The Huskies scored four touchdowns in the second quarter, but only the second two counted. Hilyard had both of his scores called back, the first on an ineligible receiver downfield penalty and the second on a block in the back.

Both of the scores that counted came very late in the half. Two plays after that second penalty, Brad Soulia went in from the 3 yard line with 1:27 left.

With Massena timeouts and incomplete passes stopping the clock, the Huskies were able to get the ball back with a Gravel interception at the 20 yard line with several seconds left. The first play from scrimmage was a 40-yard run by Gravel who went out of bounds to stop the clock. The next play was a a 40-yard catch-and-run by Picaro for a touchdown as time ran out. A Massena penalty on the play would be assessed on the opening kickoff of the second half.

That penalty proved to a factor in the next Huskie score as the Red Raiders started deep in their own zone after were pushed back even further on a sack by Brad Doe for a ten yard loss. After the punt, Malone had the ball at its 38 yard line. Darren Fullum was given the ball on a counter play, was able to get into the secondary and raced 62 yards for the touchdown.

Massena struck right back on their next possession with Raymo scoring his second touchdown on a 38-yard run but the Huskies struck back quickly with a 45-yard gain on the halfback option from Hilyard to Jordan Cosgrove leading to a 2-yard touchdown run from Gravel.

Malone extended their lead to 42-12 on the second play of the fourth quarter as Gravel ran through the Massena defense for a 72-yard wildcat run.

With the Huskies getting the starters some rest in the fourth quarter, Massena scored one more touchdown as quarterback Taylor Elsner made a nice throw to Troy Meyers for a 30-yard touchdown pass.

Malone coach Greg Marshall was very pleased with the team effort.

"We played like we are capable of playing. Our seniors took charge, Jake had a great game and Chris Picaro really came through for us," he said.

Gravel had 297 total yards with 153 yards passing and 142 rushing while Picaro had 128 yards receiving. Raymo led the Red Raiders on the ground with 101 yard while Elsner passed for 79.

Malone will travel to Shenendehowa Friday night to take on the Section II winner Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake.
