PLATTSBURGH — A first-half goal from Brandon Laurin was the difference as Chazy captured its third-straight Section VII Class D Championship Saturday in a 1-0 victory over Willsboro.

It was the Eagles' 19th sectional crown since 1980.

"Willsboro is a quality team and is very well-coached," Chazy coach Rob McAuliffe said. "So I'm thrilled with the outcome."

Willsboro goaltender Justin Drinkwine kept the game scoreless for 32 minutes with big saves on solid Chazy scoring chances, including a direct kick and a point-blank shot in the box.

However, Laurin finally tallied what would be the game's only score with just over eight minutes remaining in the half.

"I thought, in the first half, we generated a lot of good chances," McAulliffe said "I thought it was imperative that we get a score in the first half while the wind was at our backs.

"In the second half, Willsboro had a lot more chances. They have such good forwards and we realize that if we make any mistakes in the back, they could score."

Willsboro (11-4-2) was a bit more aggressive offensively in the second half and tallied nearly all of its shots in the second stanza.

"We knew we were just one touch away from getting it back to even," Willsboro coach Andrew Lee said. "Chazy defends so well, they are very quick to the ball."

McAuliffe said he was pleased with how Chazy (17-0-2) played a smart and well-organized game.

"(Willsboro) kept coming with pressure — I was happy with the way guys like Nathan Reynolds, Shea Howley, Michael Santor, Andrew LaPierre and Austin Santor stepped up and responded."

Lee added: "The effort from our guys was phenomenal — these kids really fight for each other and support each other.

"Clay Sherman and Dakota Sayward have been great. Without those two sophomores we wouldn't have gotten this far. And the leadership from Justin (Drinkwine), Lucas Strong and Tyler Pierce was big with us."

Chazy will face Harrisville next Saturday at Plattsburgh High School.
