POINT AU ROCHE — Andy Hastings runs out of superlatives when he gets to talking about his Beekmantown boys' cross-country team.

"I can't say enough about them and what they've done the last two years," the Beekmantown coach acknowledged Saturday, after his Eagles won a second straight Champlain Valley Athletic Conference championship meet.

"It's a great group of kids; they're 35-1 over the last two years. They come to practice every day ready to work and always have a great attitude. They've been great representatives of the school and the area.

"Gary (Assistant Coach Phillips) and I were saying 'teams like this don't come along that often, maybe never."

The Eagles, who ran through the regular season unbeaten, turned in another sterling performance Saturday over their home course at Point au Roche State Park.

"We've run five meets there this year; they know the course," Hastings added.

Beekmantown finished with 30 points, 11 up on second-place Seton Catholic with no other team within 70 points.

Seton Catholic's Michael Champagne, who set the course record just last Tuesday, won with relative ease, although his time of 14 minutes, 52 seconds for the 3 miles was well off the mark.

Beekmantown's Brendan Courneene was second in 15:27 while teammate Adam Shearer came in third in 15:39.

Zach Ziemer, running a huge race for Seton Catholic, took fourth in 16:10 while Saranac's rising star Josh Wade was fifth in 16:18.

Beekmantown put two more runners in the top 10 (Josh Turner and Justin Collier) with Nick Tallon, 11th.

It was quite a showing by Beekmantown, which was without senior captain Ethan Waite, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury.

"He (Waite) was really disappointed. He's only run three times since he hurt his ankle and he had some problems with an achilles tendon afterward," Hastings related. "He could have run today, but we held him out; our focus is on next week (the Section VII championships). We really need him then."

A strong wind and a wet course offered CVAC runners more of a challenge Saturday.

"You look at the times they were slower than expected, but that's the nature of the sport, contending with the wind and rain," Hastings continued.

"We had some standing water at the starting line and that's something we've never had. A couple of places on the course were wetter than I've seen it."

Saranac Lake girls win
The Saranac Lake girls, also coming off a perfect dual-meet campaign, won the CVAC meet with 50 points, nine up on Seton Catholic. Saranac was third with 73

"We knew that Saranac had been running very well, but we almost overlooked Seton," admitted Saranac Lake girls' coach David Tyldesley.

"Saranac didn't run quite as strong as last Tuesday (in the season finale) with Saranac Lake), but we know they'll be extremely tough next weekend in the sectionals."

The Red Storm were without No. 5 runner Geanette Orton, who missed the meet with a strep throat.

But they still put four runners in the top 10.

Anna Rabideau of Seton Catholic was a convincing winner in 19:04 to cap off an undefeated season in the CVAC.

Beekmantown's Bailey Weightman was a strong second in 19:38, followed by Saranac Lake's Kendra Leonidas (19:46), Julia Bowler (19:47) and Elena Beideck (19:55).

"Elena Beideck, in her first year on the varsity, did a superb job coming in fifth and Julie Bowler has been running really well and was close (one second) to Kendra (Leonidas), today," Tyldesley added.

The Section VII championships will be held Friday at Plattsburgh State over the same course to be used for the state meet in two weeks.
