GRANVILLE — The Clinton County Mariners rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday, capped by Alex LaFountain's RBI single, and pulled off a 9-8 win over Chester in the Granville American Legion Tournament.

The Mariners (11-7) played just one game due to rainy weather. They have games against Fair Haven today at 9 a.m. and then the Champlain Edge at noon — both at Fair Haven (Vt.) High School.

Chester scored a run in the sixth to break a 6-6 tie and added one more in the top of the seventh for an 8-6 lead.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Matt Leta singled and Frank Buksa followed with a 2-run homer to tie it. Aaron Tenbuuren then doubled, and pinch-hitter LaFountain rapped a two-out RBI single for the walkoff game-winner.

Clinton County fell behind, 6-0, when Chester scored three runs in each of the first and second innings.

The Mariners got one run back in the bottom of the second, four in the third to close to within one and one more in the fourth to tie it.

"We fell behind early on some walks, a key error and some hits," said Mariners head coach John Flynn. "But we battled back to tie it before they took the lead again.

"What we got out of the game was that we came from behind in the bottom of the seventh inning to win, and that's the first time this year we've done that."

Matt Brown went the first six innings on the mound for the Mariners and Matt Seymour the seventh for the win.

"Brown didn't have his best stuff today," Flynn said. "But he battled. He got a little tired at the end."

Tenbuuren had a big day at the plate for the Mariners with three doubles and a single. Buksa added a home run and single, and Leta a single and double in a 12-hit attack.

"We were playing without (Pat) Shaughnessy and (Jordan) Keysor today, and those are two key people out of our line-up," Flynn said. "So I was happy with the win."
