Montreal beats Mariners

PLATTSBURGH — Getting quality pitching wasn't the problem for the Clinton County Mariners Saturday.

Finding a solution to the Montreal Titans' pitching, however, was an issue for the local American Legion baseball team.

The Mariners, who recorded a 13-0, five-inning victory over the Norfolk Rovers Saturday morning, dropped a 2-0 decision in the rain to the Titans at Lefty Wilson Field to finish 1-1 during the first day of action in the Annual Brian Mehan/Alex Turner Memorial Tournament.

Against the Rovers, Jordan Keysor struck out eight and allowed just one hit in going the first four innings for the win.

"Keysor had total command, especially with his curve," said Mariners head coach John Flynn. "And, Eric Rock came in and threw very hard in the fifth."

Clinton County also had a good game offensively, with Will Flynn getting three hits, including a two-run single and RBI double to go with four RBI in all. Keysor, Matt Leta and Kyle Rascoe added two hits apiece.

Pat Shaughnessy, Leta and Rascoe all connected for two-run homers in a 12-hit attack.

"We hit the ball really well," Flynn said.

It was a different story, however, against Montreal as winning pitcher Sam Lamothe and reliever Tyler Durward, who pitched the final three innings for the save, combined on a five-hit shutout and nine strikeouts.

Tough-luck losing pitcher Matt Brown went the six innings, allowing five hits and fanning seven.

"We talked about having a plan at the plate and we were all over the place in this game," Flynn said. "We didn't have many good at-bats. They have very good pitchers and maybe we were too aggressive at the plate.

"Matt (Brown) pitched a great game. He gave up runs in the first and second innings, but he's a warrior."

Keysor led the Mariners with two hits, while Flynn, Joe Kirkpatrick and Alex LaFountain had the only other hits.

"We have one opportunity when we had the bases loaded and weren't able to take advantage," Flynn said.

Clinton County, which is 3-3 overall, plays two games today — at 9 a.m. against the Saratoga Jr. Stampede and at 4:30 p.m. versus Malone Post #219.

"We would need to win our two games and have Montreal lose both of their two games in order to win the tournament," Flynn said.

"But, we just need to get some wins and get people some playing time," Flynn said.

The Ticonderoga Legion team dropped out of the event, reducing the field from seven to six teams.
