HERKIMER -- The Ticonderoga girls' softball team knocked off two previously unbeaten teams Saturday in the Mudville Girls' Softball Tournament.
The Sentinels (10-2 overall) recorded a 4-3 victory over Malone's Franklin Academy and then a 2-0 triumph over Stockbridge, a team from the Rochester area.
Against Malone, Ticonderoga scored three runs in the second inning, with Arielle Vilardo, Julie Thompson and Morgan Jordan all scoring runs.
Brittany LaVoie came across on a fielder's choice in the fifth to give the Sentinels a 4-2 lead.
Haley Poupore, who drove in a run with a double earlier in the game, added a RBI single in the seventh to cut Malone's deficit to 4-3. But, that would be as close at the Huskies would get as an infield grounder ended the contest.
Katie Karkoski picked up the win for Ticonderoga, going five innings while striking out six and walking two. Thompson went the last two innings, striking out three, for the save.
Meaghan Patterson took the loss for Malone, striking out three and walking two.
Against Stockbridge, Karkoski went the distance for the win while facing only 25 batters. She struck out 13 and walked two.
Juliann Mandy scored the first run of the game for the Sentinels in the first inning. Anna Besson had an RBI single in the sixth to score Samantha Cawley to give Ticonderoga a 2-0 lead.
Cheyenne Burpus took the loss for Stockbridge as she struck out 10 and walked one.
"I'm very pleased with the trip and to see that kind of pitching," Ticonderoga coach Shannon Huntington said. "We hit the ball well and played good defense."
Vilardo was named Most Valuable Player as the Sentinels won their bracket.
