Fishing competition, fun and otherwise, this spring

There are a number of fishing tournaments scheduled for the Adirondacks and Champlain Valley in May and June. Here are three to check out:

AuSable River Two-Fly

This coming weekend, May 17, is the Annual Ausable River Two-Fly Challenge. The friendly competition allows anglers to use their two best flies in catching and releasing the largest trout caught from the West Branch between the Iron Bridge near the Ski Jump in Lake Placid and Wilmington Dam. Anglers use the buddy system when fishing. The awards ceremony and dinner are at the Hungry Trout in Wilmington Saturday evening. This year's guest speaker is Fran Betters. For more information, call 1-888-WHITEFACE or go to the Web site www.ausableflyfishing.com.

The Rotary International

May 30 through June 1 marks the 23rd anniversary of Plattsburgh Rotary's International Fishing Classic on Lake Champlain.

As in the past, the three eligible fish are lake trout, landlocked Atlantic salmon and walleye, and this year we should start seeing less wounded salmon and lakers coming in now that Vermont has finally joined in on a permanent lamprey-control program. Add to this the recent influx of alewives, a bait fish, and it is not surprising that there have been reports of some very large lake trout already being taken recently. The weigh-in stations are, once again, amply spread out on both sides of the lake. The awards ceremony this year will be held at Claire and Carl's Dockside at the Plattsburgh Boat Basin. You can register by calling toll-free at 1-877-519-7942.

Over the years, proceeds for this annual fishing tournament have been put back into the community through donations to an array of service organizations and groups.

AuSable Wulff in Wilmington

The Fifth Annual AuSable Wulff Fly Fishing Contest, hosted by the Adirondack Sport Shop at the Evening Hatch on Route 86 in Wilmington, is slated for June 12 through 14. As in the past, this is more of a fun contest than serious competition, but there are numerous prizes for the angler recording the largest trout in this catch-and-release event. The buddy system will be in place.

An old-fashioned cookout is scheduled for Sunday. The contest is named for the famous fly Fran Betters developed 45 years ago. For more information, call 946-2605 or go to the Web site www.ausablewulff.com.
