College fishing team finishes second overall
PHILOTT LAKE, Va. — Plattsburgh State sent two fishing teams to compete in the National Guard FLW College Northern Conference Championship.
The team of Port Kent’s Richard Lee and Grand Island’s Chris Benninger landed in second place overall and received $5,000 in prize money. The competition will be televised Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. on the FLW fishing channel.
After Day 1, Lee and Benninger were in third place.
On Day 2, they were able to hold on to that position, which guaranteed them a spot in the Nationals in April 2013.
On Day 3, only the top five teams returned and the local team finished in second place.
Wooden Bat League results announced
PLATTSBURGH — Zachary’s/Mtn. Valley/Int. Sol. got the win over Bat Company with a score of 11-8. Zachary’s Ian Newhart had two hits and an RBI, and Jr. Barber added two hits and two RBIs in the winning effort.
Bat Company’s Mike Bordeau and Jim Manchester combined for five hits and two RBIs.
New York State Police scored 14 runs in their shutout of Meron’s Expos. Nate Graves had two hits and scored three runs for the NYSP, and Mike Flaherty added two hits and two RBIs.
Mike Bergman led Meron’s with one hit.
The 4th Ward Warriors edged out Off the Field Sports/AC North, 7-5. Hector Duquette had two hits and scored a run while Nate Durkee also had two hits and added an RBI. Tom Svarplaitis produced three hits and two RBIs, and Craig Worley added two hits with a pair of RBIs.
Zachary’s/Mtn. Valley/Int. Sol overpowered Bat Company to take the game, 10-5. Zachary’s Chris Markwica had two hits and two RBI’s and added a stolen base. Ian Newhart tallied one hit but scored three runs. The Bat Company’s Jim Manchester and Brett Wilmott had two hits each, but it was not enough to stay in the game.
Stick-n-puck, public skating set for this week
PLATTSBURGH — The Ameri-Can North Sports Center will hold stick-n-puck on Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and on Friday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Public skating will take place Sunday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Fuller records a hole-in-one
PORT KENT — Kathy Fuller, on Saturday, Sept. 8, used a 7-iron to record a hole-in-one on the par-3, third hole at Harmony Golf Club. The shot was witnessed by Robert Fuller.
