Aveson, Senese recognized withECAC West weekly honors

PLATTSBURGH — Sydney Aveson of the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West Goalie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 5, while Giovanna Senese was also recognized with a spot on this week’s honor roll.

The West Covina, Calif., native picked up her eighth shutout of the season in Sunday’s 6-0 win over Norwich. Aveson made 27 saves to improve to 8-0-1 on the year.

With 25 career shutouts, Aveson is the all-time program leader for the Cardinals. Aveson leads all Division III goalies with a 0.11 goals-against average and a .994 save percentage. Aveson has earned five of the eight weekly goalie honors this season from the conference.

Senese earns a spot on the ECAC West honor roll for the second time this season. Senese tallied two goals in the Cardinals’ win against Norwich. She scored the eventual game-winning goal, getting the Cardinals’ first of the afternoon just 3:10 into the game.

Kempainen named ECAC EastPlayer of the Week

COLCHESTER, Vt. — Saint Michael’s College women’s ice hockey sophomore Amanda Kempainen (Chazy/Chazy Flyers U19) was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 5.

Kempainen helped Saint Michael’s go 1-0-1 over the weekend, while winning its own DoubleTree Ice Hockey Classic, being named tournament MVP.

After a scoreless tie with Division I Sacred Heart University Friday, Kempainen netted the first natural hat trick in program history — and the 11th hat trick overall — on just three shots, while maintaining a plus-three rating in a 5-1 win over Nichols College Saturday.

Kempainen, whose parents were both NCAA champions and All-America Nordic skiers at the University of Vermont in the 1980s, netted only the fifth hat trick by an ECAC East player this year with her three-goal performance.

After missing much of last season and totaling three points in 15 contests, Kempainen has returned with a team-high four goals this winter, while missing only one game.
