Airborne adds Stunt Show to regular season finale
PLATTSBURGH — The Mike Watts Memorial 100 for the DIRTcar Modifieds headlines Airborne Park Speedway’s 60th regular season finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
An added attraction, national stuntman Chris Morena will perform “Sky Crash” during which he will use a ramp launch to jump a Buick Skylark over one tower of cars and attempt to clear second array of parked cars.
Morena and cohort Tim Chitwood are arriving from Fulton Speedway where they have been filming for the History Channel’s new reality television show — “American Daredevils.”
In 2008 at Airborne, Morena broke the record for a two-wheel drive stock pickup truck, jumping 196 feet. More information about Morena, Chitwood and their stunt show is available at autostunts.com.
Champions in three divisions will be determined Sunday.
Limited Late Model point leader Robin Wood of Plattsburgh and Jamy Begor of Mooers are separated by 12 points.
Lance Rabtoy of Fairfax, Vt., will try for his first Renegade title. Rabtoy leads five-time feature winner Jason McClatchie of Plattsburgh, 688-667.
Jayson Criss of Plattsburgh is the Mini-Modified point leader. His closest pursuer is Dale O’Neil of Mooers, a seven-time winner. If O’Neil wins Sunday, Criss needs to finish 10th or better to deny O’Neill the crown and become the 2013 Mini-Modified champion.
All five of Airborne’s weekly divisions will compete.
Todd Stone and Nick Heywood clinched the Ernie’s Tools Modified and J&S Steel Sportsman Modified titles respectively with feature wins last Saturday.
Patrice McGrail of Candiac, Que., the 2012 DIRTcar Modified runner-up to Stone, will return to action Sunday to contest the Modifieds’ longest-distance event of the year, held in memory of long-time photographer and supporter Mike Watts.
Adult admission is $18 Sunday. Kids 12 and under are admitted free.
Derrick O’Donnell crowned “King of the Road”
BARRE, Vt. — Phil Scott made Kyle Pembroke pay for one mistake at the front of the field on lap 37 of the VP Racing Fuels Late Model 50 at Thunder Road and went on to his second win of the season and the 29th of his career Thursday.
Scott shot between a backmarker in the low lane and Pembroke on the rim of turn two in a go-for-broke move for the last of six lead changes.
“I knew I had to take the opportunity, when I saw it,” Scott said.
During the first half of the event, Pembroke and pole sitter Joe Becker raced side-by-side for more than 20 laps with Scott and eventual runner-up Joey Laquerre in close pursuit.
“I got my right side tires up in the dirt and Phil took full advantage,” Pembroke said.
Rookie Derrick O’Donnell from North Haverhill, N.H., driving the Cody Chevrolet/Gary Clay Builders No. 60, had an even better night than Scott.
O’Donnell climbed from 18th to finish 8th and clinch the 2013 Thunder Road Late Model Championship.
O’Donnell won two races and had seven top-five finishes in 2013 to become the first rookie in Thunder Road’s 53-year history to win the headline division crown.
“This won’t settle in for a while, but I’m thrilled,” O’Donnell said after receiving a large rotating trophy from 2012 champion Nick Sweet in victory lane. Sweet became the 2013 runner-up.
Becker hung tough to finish fourth. Jamie Fisher was fifth, followed by Cody Blake, Brooks Clark, O’Donnell, Jason Corliss and Derek Ming.
