PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Senior Mariners are showing some character early in the season.

Getting off to a slow start in games, however, is a concern.

Logan Recor’s run-scoring double in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday gave the Mariners a 5-4 victory over the Norfolk Rovers at Lefty Wilson Field.

Clinton County (3-0) fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning before rallying for its third one-run win to open the season.

“That’s three games in a row where we have gotten off to a shaky start,” Mariners coach Matt Tolosky said. “We made two errors in the first inning tonight and bobbled a fielder’s choice.

“But, once again, we found a way to win. Our pitchers did a good job staying composed.”

The Mariners scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to cut their deficit in half and added runs in the fourth and fifth to tie it. Marcus Lefebvre’s sacrifice fly in the fifth knotted the score.

In the sixth inning, Tanner Rascoe walked, stole second and scored on Recor’s one-out, RBI double.

Mariners starter Jack Tolosky shook off the four-run first and blanked the Rovers over the next four innings.

Center fielder Rascoe made the defensive play of the game in the fourth to get Jack Tolosky out of potential trouble. Norfolk loaded the bases with one out, and Rascoe made a nice running catch on a line drive and threw to third base to catch the runner off base and get a double play.

Jeremy Barber then pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the win.

“Jack stuck with it after the first inning and threw four scoreless innings, with help from Rascoe’s catch,” Matt Tolosky said. “Then Jeremy came in and gave us two more scoreless innings. Both deserve a lot of credit.”

The Rovers held a 6-4 advantage in hits. Recor finished with a double and a single, Rascoe an RBI double and Adam Goldfarb a double.

“We didn’t have many hits, but the ones we had were key ones at the right time,” Matt Tolosky said.

The Mariners are scheduled to return to the diamond on Friday when they play the Malone Legion at 5:30 p.m. in Lyon Mountain.
