RAYMONDVILLE — The Clinton County Senior Mariners have made a habit of falling behind early in games and then rallying this season.
Tuesday, the Mariners jumped in front and stayed there.
Clinton County (7-3) pushed across five runs in the third inning and went on to post a 6-2 win over the Norfolk Rovers.
“We put it all together — pitching, defense, timely hitting and baserunning,” Mariners coach Matt Tolosky said . “This was as good a game as we have played this season.”
It was a scoreless game until the Mariners broke through for five in the third. Jack Tolosky opened the inning with a single and stole second. The Rovers, however, got the next two batters before Chris Roenbeck reached on an infield error, with Tolosky scoring the first run of the contest.
Marcus Lefebvre then singled and stole second, Mitchell Cunningham rapped a RBI single and Ryan Meyer doubled in two runs, with the fifth run of the inning scoring on an error.
“We scored all five runs after two were out and were able to get some key hits,” Tolosky said.
The Mariners added their sixth run in the fourth when Tolosky scored on an infield error.
Meanwhile, Clinton County starter Jeremy Barber blanked the Rovers over the first four innings before surrendering two runs in the fifth. Barber ended up allowing four hits, striking out four and walking four in six innings. Tanner Rascoe struck out two in pitching a scoreless seventh.
“Jeremy gave us a great start and Tanner threw the ball well in his one inning,” Tolosky said. “We also played excellent defense. We didn’t make an error until the seventh when we had an overthrow of first while trying to complete a double play.”
Tolosky, Logan Recor, Roenbeck, Lefebvre, Cunningham and Meyer accounted for the Clinton County hits.
