Lakers squeak past CCC men

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College men’s basketball team was on the wrong end of an 80-79 score in Region III play Saturday.

The Cougars contested Finger Lakes Community College’s second-to-last shot, but all 6-foot-8 of Daniel Drew finished Clinton off.

Drew grabbed an offensive rebound and sank a shot with 3 seconds left to give the Lakers their final lead.

Choubert Jean-Baptiste supplied the Cougars with a 79-78 lead, when he hit a fade-away jumper with 20 seconds left.

Clinton scrapped from a 45-31 halftime deficit.

“The second half was a completely different ballgame,” Cougars coach Kevin Daugherty said. “We started to play together much more effectively. Our defense improved quite a bit.

“Drew kept them in the game, and he scored all 14 of his points in the second half. He was a tough matchup.

“Our effort in the second half was tremendous. We got a glimpse of how good we could be.”

DaJuan Williamson and Keifer Chowlinon anchored the Cougars with 21 points apiece.
