WARWICK, R.I. — For the second time in as many days, the Clinton County Junior Mariners weren’t able to muster timely hits.
The Mariners (18-6), which were held to one run on four hits in a 10-run loss Thursday, fell to Show Baseball Academy, 9-3, in their third game of the Firecracker Tournament in Warwick, R.I., Friday.
Clinton County was held scoreless in six of its seven innings at the plate.
“We left 10 men on base,” Mariners coach Gary Duquette said. “(Friday), we couldn’t get the big hit. I can’t say we’re not getting productive at-bats, though.
“We worked six walks and finished with eight hits, so our kids are doing what they’re supposed to do. Unfortunately, the baseball didn’t bounce our way.”
Clinton County faced a two-run deficit after three frames, but surrendered five runs in the fourth.
“They’re a good-hitting team,” Duquette said. “They hit the other way, took walks when possible and moved runners. Baseball down here is very, very good. We’re playing some quality teams. Hopefully, this makes us better for districts and zones.”
The Mariners committed three fielding errors.
“We’re a good defensive team, so I can’t blame (the loss) on our defense,” Duquette said. “We had a few miscues, but we’re a young team. That stuff is going to happen.
“Despite the three errors, Zach Bingel played well at second base, while Alex Follmer was consistent at shortstop.”
Follmer, Dan Hartman and Brady Pennington each registered two hits. Pennington was credited with a double, Clinton County’s only extra-base hit.
The Mariners have one more round-robin game remaining on their schedule. Clinton County will play Warwick PAL of Warwick, R.I., today.
“With the exception of our game, all games were rained out (Friday),” Duquette said. “We’re scheduled for 8:30 a.m., but as of now, we’re not sure what’s going to happen. We might not play until 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. We’re still waiting for the schedule to come out.”
