Northeastern Clinton’s Nick Leduc helped put the Plattsburgh High hockey team in a 4-0 hole Wednesday night.
And, after the Hornets battled back to tie the game, Leduc put Plattsburgh in another hole — this one for good.
Leduc finished with five goals to lead the Cougars to a 7-4 victory in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play at the Ameri-Can North Sports Center.
Leduc tallied two goals and Colby Boire one in the first period to give Northeastern Clinton a 3-0 lead and Reece Tucker’s goal with five minutes gone in the second stanza made it 4-0.
Plattsburgh, however, rallied back to tie it on two goals by Eric Bechard and one apiece by John Fine-Lease and Jack Tolosky.
But Leduc scored goals 24 seconds apart in the third period to put Northeastern Clinton back up by two and then added an empty-net marker.
“Northeastern Clinton deserves a lot of credit,” Plattsburgh coach Jamie Reidy said. “They are not the most skilled team in the CVAC but they compete for the entire game. They were the better team (Wednesday) and certainly deserved to win the game.
“We are a young team that is going to go through some growing pains, especially at some key positions. That showed (Wednesday). It’s a team game and we will have to find a way to pick the kids up and get right back to work.
“The line of Gavin Giroux, Jeff Latinville and Eusung Choe, who are all freshmen, played a solid game for us.”
The Hornets held a 34-30 advantage in shots, with Anthony Piche making 30 saves for the Cougars and Dean Dashnaw 24 stops for Plattsburgh.
