LYNDONVILE, Vt. — The Plattsburgh State baseball team, with several of its regulars in class, took just 13 players on the road Tuesday and dropped a 3-2 decision to Lyndon State in a nonconference game.
The Hornets (10-17) pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 2-all tie.
“We had runners on second and third, with one out, in the seventh and then first and second, with one out, in the eighth,” Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey said. “But we weren’t able to take the lead.
“In the bottom of the eighth, they got a bleeder to right and the kid stole second. Then they got another hit to put runners on first and third. We knew they were going to squeeze so we threw to first base. But the kid at first kept running and the runner on third came home to score.”
The Cardinals (13-22) fell behind early, with the Hornets scoring a run in the first and one in the second for a 2-0 lead.
Plattsburgh got one back in the fourth when Matt Meunier doubled and scored on John Casten’s single.
The Cardinals then tied it in the sixth when Nicholas Lupo was hit by a pitch, stole second, Casten walked and Ben Weightman hit a sacrifice fly after Plattsburgh executed a double steal.
Casten and Mike Doddy led the Cardinals with two hits each. Plattsburgh finished with eight hits in all.
Colin Crawford started on the mound and Scott Orr took over in the fourth. Orr was the losing pitcher, despite giving up just the one run.
“It was a little tough with the lineup we had available,” Doorey said. “But it was a competitive game and a pretty clean one for the most part.”
The Cardinals close out their season with a 7 p.m. game tonight against SUNY Canton at Lefty Wilson Field.
