PLATTSBURGH — Facing inclement weather, the Clinton Community College softball team totaled 10 innings of play this spring.
That didn’t help Monday.
North Country Community College collected 14-5 and 14-8 wins, earning a two-game sweep of the Cougars (0-4) in their season finale.
“It’s been awful for these girls,” Clinton coach Sami Stoughton said. “If we had some experience, it could’ve been a lot different for us. Two, five-inning games didn’t help.”
In the first of two games, the Saints (4-15) erased a one-run deficit with eight runs in the top of the second inning.
“We were excited with one run in the first, and then they caught on to our pitcher,” Stoughton said. “She had three walks, but that really didn’t hurt us. They’re good at baserunning and have experience.”
The Cougars cut the deficit to 8-4 in the fourth frame, but North Country pulled away with six runs in the fifth.
“They started off the fifth with a single, walked three times, added another single and then a batter was hit by pitch,” Stoughton said. “It all went downhill from there. We couldn’t catch a break.”
Olivia Furnia and Madeline Barber each went 2-for-3 in the setback, while Alyson Arnold, Jessica Baker, Lyndale Nephew and Shannon Bombard added hits.
In the second ballgame, an error in the fourth inning proved costly for Clinton.
“Unfortunately, our only error came in the fourth, and they scored two runs on that,” Stoughton said.
“They also had four doubles in the first inning. It was unfortunate.”
Despite the six-run loss, the Cougars outhit the Saints, 16-15.
“Our bats came alive,” Stoughton said. “We hit the ball well. But sometimes, they were being hit right at people.”
Ten of 11 Clinton players used up a year of NJCAA eligibility in its four-game season.
“No, never in my life have I seen this before,” Stoughton said. “Weather-wise, it’s been a rough year. We’ll hope for better weather next winter.
“But from our first game to our last, they played their butts off. I can’t say they didn’t give it their best out there. They did.”
