PITTSBURGH — It took the No. 1 Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team three minutes and 14 seconds to open the floodgates Saturday.
The Cardinals (20-1-1, 12-1-0) scored four times in the first, second and third period in a 12-1 defeat of Chatham University at the McKnight Hockey Center.
“Our kids came out and played the game as it’s supposed to be played,” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. “Their goalie played well in the early going. We were finally able to get to her with four goals in each period.
“Overall, it was a pretty good effort. The kids went out and moved the puck extremely well and finished their opportunities. The goal was to get out there and get two or three in the first period.”
Alyssa Parke, Tyne Gove and Bridget Balisy each scored on two occasions, while Mia Favretto, Chelsea VanGlahn, Andrea Ziesmann, Jenny Kistner, Katelyn Turk and Jordan Caldwell also recorded tallies.
“The game was played in their zone for most of the game,” Houle said. “They had very little time in our end. They did a nice job blocking shots at first, but we got pucks to the middle of the ice and got some quality opportunities.
“We got goals from the point and on rebound chances. It was just a good effort.”
The Cardinals outshot the Cougars (4-16-2, 3-10-0) by a 56-9 margin.
Plattsburgh goaltender Ally Ross stopped 8-of-9 shots faced between the pipes in the 11-goal rout. Chatham’s Kaitlynn Smith (31) and Megan Buchanan (13) combined for 44 saves.
The Cardinals were 0-for-2 on the one-player advantage, totaling five shots on the power play.
The Cougars play host to Plattsburgh for the second of two ECAC West bouts at 1 p.m. today.
“They know what I’m going to tell them,” Houle said. “Any league game is a big game. We have to go out and take care of business. They know the message that’s coming. We have to perform the way we have all year.”
