SARANAC LAKE — Mohawk Valley Community College withstood a 41-point, 15-rebound performance from Steve Carder and held on for an 83-79 victory over North Country Community College in men’s basketball on Sunday.

The Hawks escaped their weekend trip north with two wins, including a 55-54 decision over Clinton Community College on Saturday.

Basil Harley led Mohawk Valley with 27 points, while Lazaro Martinez followed with 20, Alexshay Pearce, 11 and Darryl Brown, 10.

The Hawks held a 38-36 halftime lead, despite Carder’s 20 points. Carder than added 21 after intermission.

“Carder was tremendous,” North Country coach Chad LaDue said. “They couldn’t stop him.”

Steven Poulter added 12 points and 11 rebounds, Michael Boyea 10 points and seven assists, and Jared Heden nine points for the Saints (14-8, 9-8).

“Our effort level was high,” LaDue said. “But we didn’t always play smart with the basketball — we had too many turnovers.”

North Country had its chances down the stretch.

“We were down by two points with 28 seconds left,” LaDue said. “With the game Carder had, we wanted to get him a touch. But there was a charging call.

“We then fouled them and they hit one of two from the line. We got the ball back with under 12 seconds left and ran a play where we got a great look — a wide-open look at a three. But we missed it and they then hit one of two from the line.”

The Saints return to the court this coming Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Adirondack Community College.

“We have five games remaining, three at home, and we need to win two of them in order to get into the playoffs,” LaDue said.
