Lake Placid Book Club meets Monday
LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Institute Book Club will meet to discuss “Good Night Sweet Prince, the Life and Times of John Barrymore,” by Gene Fowler, at 7 p.m. Monday, April 29, at the Lake Placid Public Library.
John Barrymore, a member of the famous Barrymore clan, aristocrats of American acting, led a fascinating, if somewhat chaotic, life. Fowler was a friend of Barrymore’s, and this biography is considered a rare look into the star’s personal and professional life.
Due to Memorial Day, the Book Club’s May meeting will be held on Monday, May 20, when the group will discuss “The Empress of Fashion: A Life of Diana Vreeland,” by Amanda Mackenzie Stuart.
All are welcome to attend the meetings.

Segel working on series for middle grades
NEW YORK (AP) — Jason Segel is becoming an author.
The star of the TV series “How I Met Your Mother” and “Freaks and Geeks” has a deal with Random House Children’s Books for a middle-grade series set in a haunted town. The series is called “Nightmares!” and will debut in the fall of 2014.
Random House announced last week that best-selling children’s author Kirsten Miller will collaborate with Segel. The publisher is calling the series a story of kids “overcoming their fears.”
The 33-year-old Segel is also known for the films “Knocked Up” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”
