Cardinal women lose close one, out of SUNYAC tournament

PLATTSBURGH — In search of two wins this weekend to quality for the SUNY Athletic Conference Tournament, the Plattsburgh State women’ soccer team needed to find some offense Friday afternoon.

It didn’t happen, however.

Chelsea Stahl scored the lone goal of the game as The College at Brockport defeated the Cardinals, 1-0, at the Field House Soccer Complex, ending Plattsburgh’s hopes of going to the tournament.

Plattsburgh (4-10-2, 2-5-1) outshot Brockport, 8-5, in the first half, but its shots were limited to those from outside.

The Golden Eagles (9-4-1, 4-3-1) took advantage of a Plattsburgh defensive breakdown to score the game-winning goal at the 20:44 mark.

A Brockport free kick was deflected from Annie Terilli to Chelsea Stahl, who found the net low on the near side for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

The Cardinals had some chances in the second half as well, but were unable to get free in close.

Plattsburgh finished with a 14-10 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Laura Thompson recorded the shutout with nine saves and Kristy Kirkpatrick was in net for the Cardinals with seven saves.

It was another frustrating day in the conference for the Cardinals. Four of their five losses in the conference have been one-goal games

Plattsburgh closes out its conference schedule today, hosting Geneseo at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
