Ethel Bernard

ESSEX — Ethel Bernard Born in Short Hills, N.J., she died in her home in Essex, N.Y., on June 21, 2013, age 98.

After graduating from Radcliffe College and the New England Conservatory of Music, she pursued her deep interest in music, marrying a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and eventually working in administration at the New England Conservatory and founding the Rivers School of Music, near Boston.

She had a lifelong passion for natural history, watercolor painting, charcoal drawing, and literature, especially English novels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Encouraged by family and friends, she began several writing groups, a French conversational group and enjoyed tremendously the Read-Aloud time she participated in as, both as a reader and as an attentive listener.

Predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Albert Yves Bernard, she is survived by her daughters, Eve and Jessica; her son, Andre (Jennie); seven grandchildren, Fritzi Schreffler (David), Michael Ojala, Gordon Ojala (Ji Yun), Cawley Thompson, Lucia Bernard and Elizabeth Bernard; four great-grandchildren, Steven Schreffler, Matthew Schreffler, Leah Schreffler and Jaina Sayu Ojala; and her stepson, Francois Bernard-Treille. A memorial service will be held August 16, 2013 at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Essex, NY.
