Peru apples donated to Sandy victims
PERU — Forrence Orchards of Peru recently donated 740 cartons of McIntosh apples to be distributed to the victims of Superstorm Sandy in the metro New York area.
The apples were originally designated to be handed out to the 50,000 marathon runners at the finish line of the ING NYC Marathon. For years, Forrence Orchards has sold apples to the New York Apple Association, who in return offers the Mac as the official apple of the ING NYC Marathon.
Each runner that crosses the finish line receives a goody bag, that includes a Mac apple and other items. The New York Apple Assocaition has been a corporate sponsor of the event for 14 years and has purchased the North Country Macs from Forrence orchards. This year, because of Storm Sandy, the Sunday race was eventually called off on Friday, but the apples had already been delivered to Central Park. The New York Road Runners subsequently sent the apples on to the NYC Food Bank system.
As a show of support and generosity to so many that were hurt by the storm, Peter Forrence and his family decided not to charge anyone for the fruit.
