MALONE — Malone Town Councilor Mary Scharf is seeking the Democratic Party caucus nomination for town supervisor against incumbent Howard Maneely.
The caucus is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at North Country Community College, 75 William St.
“The person I thought was going to run decided not to, so I made the decision so the people have another option,” Scharf said.
“A lot of people have been encouraging me, and I decided it was time to run. But like with any election, you never know.”
She said a few people are helping her, contacting fellow Democrats for their support.
“I’ve got worker bees going.”
Scarf has served one term on the Town Council and said she feels it’s the right time to do more in Malone.
“If you look around the community, things are not economically positive, and in the North Country in general, she said, “and I feel it’s time for a change.”
“There are no bad feelings,” Scharf said about challenging Maneely. “We’ll see what happens Monday. In any case, one of us will come out with (the nomination).”
WANTS JOB AGAIN
Having been supervisor since the 1998 Ice Storm, Maneely said, he’s up for the challenge.
“I think I’ve gotten a lot done, and I think there are a lot of pluses behind my name,” he said. “But I didn’t do it alone. I had some good boards with me.”
The supervisor said he’s been calling friends seeking their support because he has some business that still needs his attention, and he wants the job again.
“I want to see things finished, like the (Federal Emergency Management Agency) buyout on Lower Park Street, the sewer district on the west side and anything else that comes along,” he said.
“I’ve gotten two water and sewer districts and made sure the Walmart environmental review was done right.
“If I don’t get the nomination, well, it’s been a good run,” Maneely said. “Let’s see where the chips fall Monday night.”
Democratic Party Chairman Kevin Nichols said the candidate who does not get the town-supervisor nod can seek nomination at the caucus for other upcoming town vacancies, which include two seats on the Town Council.
