Police: Traffic stop yields heroin

PERU — Police say a speeding car drew their attention, and then they found 53 bags of heroin aboard.

Jonathan R. Brown, 20, of Plattsburgh was behind the wheel of the 1994 Lexus when it was pulled over at about 8:15 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 87 northbound in the Town of Peru, a police press release said.

He was in possession of the drugs, police said, and passenger Amanda B. Hansen, 21, of Plattsburgh was found with a small amount of marijuana and 8 milligrams of suboxone.

Brown was arrested and charged with criminal possession of controlled substance, a felony. Arraigned in Peru Town Court, he was taken to Clinton County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.

His next court date is 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 15.

Hansen was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

She was issued an appearance ticket and is set to return to Peru Court at 4:30 p.m. July 15.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol assisted State Police with the investigation.

Brown remained jailed as of Friday afternoon.
