Seton Catholic's Julian Breyette (840) and Barrett Waling (849) make their way through the woods with Plattsburgh's Alastair Russell (787) keeping pace in Section VII cross-country championships at Plattsburgh State Friday. All three helped their respective teams win class titles and berths in next Saturday's state championships, also at Plattsburgh State. Kelly Rogers of Northeastern Clinton is no doubt the most colorful, if not the warmest, runner in the section meet Friday.

PLATTSBURGH — The flu almost accomplished what no other school has been able to do — defeat the Seton Catholic girls.

The Knights, who have won every Class D championship in Section VII cross country, were all out to beat the Ticonderoga Sentinels 26-31 Friday to extend their streak to 11 straight. Freshman standout Elizabeth Fisher, among others, missed the meet with the flu while the rest of the Seton team was still feeling the effects of the flu, which ravaged the school all week.

Seton Catholic wasn't alone, however.

The outbreak cut into the size of size of both fields, reducing by 20 in each race.

Saranac Lake, on the other hand, seemed to be peaking at the right time. The Red Storm girls were at their best to capture their fourth straight Class C crown and eighth in 10 years.

"The girls ran an unbelievable race," said Saranac Lake Coach David Tyldesley. "I told them before the race that if we're going to beat Saranac, we've got to finish 1-4 and who ever ends up being our fifth runner has to pass two or three (Saranac girls).

"Elena Beideck took off halfway through the race and was our lead runner. Elena and Kendra (Leonidas) finished in 21:00 and our fourth runner was 21:13; that's nice pack."

Andrea Nye, the Red Storm's fifth runner, came in fifth, just ahead of teammate Geanette Orton.

The Peru girls, who had their own issues with the flu in the past two weeks, regrouped to win Class B for the second time in three years, overcoming a splendid 2-3 finish by Beekmantown's Bailey Weightman and Maile Sapp.

Seton Catholic's Anna Rabideau, who has yet to lose a race in the section, easily won the girls' race in 19:44.

The Beekmantown and Seton Catholic boys will be returning to the state meet next Saturday in Plattsburgh and will be joined by Plattsburgh High, the Class C champ. The Hornets, who won the Class B titles in 2006 and '07, dropped to Class C this season.

Mike Champagne, as expected, ran away from the field in the boys' race. The defending state Class D champion, won in 15:51 with Beekmantown's strong 1-2 combination of Brendan Courneene and Adam Shearer preventing Seton from a sweep of the first four places.

Jacob DeWitt, Zach Ziemer and freshman Mitchell Ryan, who had a huge race, gave Seton four boys in the top 10.
