MINEVILLE — Moriah captured its second-consecutive Class D Northern Football Conference title Friday night at Linney Field in a 42-12 victory over Ticonderoga.

Ron Schofield found the end zone three times and compiled 165 yards rushing in the Vikings victory.

Schofield's third touchdown may have also been the game-changer.

After Ticonderoga's Robert Kearns returned the second-half opening kickoff 80 yards for a score, Schofield responded with a 71-yard return of his own on the ensuing kick.

The scoring swing was one of many examples of Ticonderoga's game-long battle against momentum.

"We had our opportunities," Ticonderoga coach Bob Sutphen said. "But against a great team like Moriah, you have to capitalize on every single opportunity to have a chance, and we weren't able to do that tonight."

Ticonderoga held the Vikings to a three-and-out on Moriah's first offensive possession and put together a solid drive on its first offensive possession. However, the Sentinels let a go-ahead scoring chance slip through their hands on a dropped pass in the end zone, and Moriah scored three times in the second quarter.

"They hit us pretty good for most of the first quarter," Moriah coach Don Tesar said. "After that we picked up their blitz pretty well and the guys just settled down.

"The offensive line has been playing pretty good," Tesar said. "We had running holes for every back."

Sutphen added: "You can only contain their run for so long."

Ticonderoga's Todd Carr added a rushing touchdown for the Sentinels to end the game. Dan Morrison led Ticonderoga on the ground with 49 yards and Kearns added 37.

"Our guys played hard," Sutphen said. "I can definitely say that they came here and played tough."
