Emery gets 400th victory

PLATTSBURGH -- Bob Emery, just moments after winning his 400th game as head coach of the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team Friday night, was already thinking about No. 401.

"As good as this 400th win feels, I'll feel a lot better about 401 if we get it next Friday," said Emery, referring to the Cardinals' next game at defending Division III national champion Oswego.

For the record, Emery ran his career coaching mark to 400-133-42 with a surprisingly one-sided 11-1 thumping of Potsdam in State University of New York Athletic Conference action at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Emery, who is currently in his 19th year as head coach at Plattsburgh, becomes the fifth coach in NCAA Division III men's hockey history to reach 400 wins.

"I've had a great supporting cast here over the years," Emery said. "Coaching is overrated -- you've got to have great players.

"I didn't have to do much tonight. We give the players a system and they went out and followed it. They were moving their feet well."

As was the case in last weekend's two home wins over Morrisville State, the Cardinals (3-0, 3-0) were once again dominant on special teams, scoring five power-play goals in addition to getting one short-handed tally.

Plattsburgh State broke out on top, 3-0, after one period on an even-strength goal by Joey Wilson at 11:43 and power-play markers from Riley Hill at 15:28 and Nick Rolls at 19:12.

It became 5-0 midway through the second stanza when T.J. Cooper scored shorthanded at 8:23 and then Dylan Clarke with the Cardinals on a 5-on-3 skating advantage at 12:10.

The lone bright spot for the young Bears (1-2, 0-1), who have 12 freshmen on the team, came at 14:21 on Fraser Smith's goal.

Plattsburgh State then poured it on with six unanswered goals in the third, three off starting goaltender Rick Miller and three more off his replacement, Travis Crickard.

It was Cooper 18 seconds into the stanza, followed by Mike Baccaro with a power-play goal at 6:06, Mike Thomson on the powerplay at 8:23, Andrew Willock at 9:21, Phil Farrow at 9:41 and Baccaro again at 19:03.

"I think the guys were ready to play tonight," Emery said. "It starts in the lockerroom before the game.

"I didn't expect this kind of score. But, we did a good job limiting our mistakes and played with discipline. That's helps you put pressure on the opponent."

The Cardinals held a 52-16 advantage in shots on goal, including a 23-3 margin in the opening period when the Bears ran into some penalty problems.
