NCAA softball regionals down to 4



PLATTSBURGH -- Kim Church went 3-for-3 with an RBI as No. 5 seed Eastern Connecticut eliminated No. 1 seed Montclair State, 3-2, Friday in the Plattsburgh Regional of the NCAA Division III Softball Championships.

Eastern Connecticut (28-13) knocked out Keuka, 4-3, earlier in the day at the Cardinals Softball Complex. St. John Fisher beat Endicott, 5-0, and Montclair State started its day by shutting out Springfield, 6-0.

Eastern Connecticut scored two in the first and one in the second against Montclair State. The Red Hawks pulled within a run in the fifth inning.

Katie Pensiero started and earned the win. Montclair State's Kelly Karp pitched the first inning and suffered her first lost of the season. Courtney Caswell drove in a run.

Rachel Denny and Ashley Sullivan both had three hits on the day for Endicott. Caitlin Cravens got the win against No. 7 seed Keuka.

Montclair State's (43-6) Jennifer Jimenez smacked two homers and a single against No. 6 seed Springfield, and Jackie Ferranti also went deep. Carolyn McCrea earned the win in six innings of work.

Danielle Sargent belted a grand slam for No. 2 seed Endicott, and Sara Spaziano drove in the first run of the game against No. 3 seed St. John Fisher. Maria Mangine went the distance for the win.

Endicott (40-4) meets Cortland this morning, and then Eastern Connecticut will play St. John Fisher (25-20).
