Elizabeth Whinnen Evenson Brush


— PLATTSBURGH — Elizabeth Whinnen Evenson Brush, 89, of Lake Forest, died peacefully Monday, March 4, 2013, at Meadowbrook Healthcare, with her loving children by her side.

She was born in Mineville, April 4, 1923, the daughter of Aldo and Elizabeth Whinnen Evenson.

She grew up in Mineville and graduated from Mineville Central School. Elizabeth later attended San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in education. She later attended Plattsburgh State and received a Master's Degree of Education.

Elizabeth married Frederick Morton Brush on Sept. 28, 1945, in Kingston, N.C. She began her teaching career in San Diego, Calif., then continued in Barstow, Calif. and retired from teaching at Cumberland Head Elementary School in 1985.

She was in the United States Marine Corp Women's Reserve during World War II as a field telephone repairperson at Camp Lejune, N.C.

Elizabeth was a member of the Tuesday Literary Club, and the Monday and Wednesday Bridge Clubs. She was a volunteer librarian at Lake Forest for many years. She formed the Lake Forest Knitting Group, who knit and crocheted items for charity, donating hundreds of handmade items for needy children and for the Christmas Bureau. Elizabeth enjoyed many crafts, playing bridge, reading and crossword puzzles and was a very active member of the Plattsburgh United Methodist Church and volunteered in many activities there.

Survivors includes her children, Frederick David Brush of Norfolk, Va., Peter Whinnen Brush and his wife Jeannine of Nashville, Tenn, Elizabeth Brush Nohe and her husband Doug of Chicago, Ill., Rebecca Brush Leonard and her husband James of Plattsburgh, Josiah Wright Brush of Grapevine, Texas; eight grandchildren, Amy Brush, David Brush, Jennifer O'Brien, Katherine Nohe, Kendall Nohe, Stephen Brush, Nicholas Leonard and Amanda Leonard.

Her parents and four sisters predeceased her.

There will be no calling hours at the request of the family. A memorial service will be scheduled with family and friends in the summer to celebrate her life.
