---- — CHATEAUGAY LAKE — Eileen G. Kaska, 94, a lifelong resident of Lyon Mountain, went into the arms of her Lord, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at the home of her daughter, JoAnn, on Chateaugay Lake. JoAnn had been her mother’s primary caregiver for the last seven years. Born in Lyon Mountain on Feb. 18, 1919, Eileen was the daughter of James R. Grogan and Mary Cordick.
Eileen will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her church and her community. She saw a need for senior housing in Lyon Mountain and she didn’t let anyone stop the wheels from turning from the time she applied for grants, to ceremoniously turning over the first shovelful of dirt, until she cut the ribbon for the opening of Mountain Top Senior Housing.
Eileen was a very active member of St. Bernard’s Parish. She served as Eucharistic Minister, lector and trustee. She was a charter member of Court Our Lady of the Snows #1548 Catholic Daughters of the Americas, as well as holding various offices including grand regent. She was past district deputy as well as a state officer in the Catholic Daughters. Eileen was a member of Sorrell-Woodward American Legion Post 1623 Auxiliary, a member of the Senior Citizens of Lyon Mountain and a member of the Board of Directors of the county Senior Citizens Council. Eileen volunteered at the CVPH Medical Center gift shop for many years. She worked in various retail sales positions throughout her life including Merkels Department Store and years of selling Avon.
Eileen was married to Joseph P. Kaska who predeceased her on October 27, 1982.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and James Kaska-Templin of Plattsburgh and Chateaugay Lake and a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Sr. and Linda Kaska of Rotterdam; four grandchildren, Terri (Roger) Dufek, Robert J. Kaska Jr., Joseph Templin, Jonathan Templin and four great-grandchildren, Robert J. Kaska III, Caitlin Kaska, Renee Dufek and Brion Dufek; step-granddaughter, Aubrey (James) Contreras; two step-great-grandsons, Aidan and Roman Contreras; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Eileen was also predeceased by her eleven siblings and their spouses, Catherine (James) Ryan, Charlotte (Anthony) Stacavich, Mary (Joseph) LaVigne, William (Patricia) Grogan, James (Ola) Grogan, Nellie (Maurice) Welch, Daniel (Lucille) Grogan, Margaret (Dr. Theodore) Elsasser, John Grogan, Gertrude (Alec) Gosselin, and Rita (Vernon) McBride.
Calling hours for family and friends will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at St. Bernard’s Parish Center, Lyon Mountain.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Wednesday, Aug. 28, at St. Bernard’s Church in Lyon Mountain.
Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
