Edna M. Votraw Bombard

PLATTSBURGH — Edna M. Votraw Bombard, 89, of Plattsburgh and formerly of AuSable Forks, passed away at Meadowbrook Healthcare on Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, after a long battle with diabetes and congestive heart failure.

She was born in Franklin, N.H., on June 9, 1922, the daughter of Levi and Gertrude Betters.

She graduated from AuSable Forks Central Rural School in 1939. Edna was a devoted wife and mother and loved giving and caring for others. If someone needed help and she could do so, she did. She genuinely loved people and really enjoyed her family around her. She was employed by the Head Start Program as an aide, worked for Dr. George Najim as a dental assistant and also volunteered at Holy Name School in many capacities.

She is predeceased by her parents, Levi and Gertrude Betters; three brothers, Milton, Francis and Eugene Betters; her first husband, Albert L. Votraw, whom she married on Oct. 28, 1940; and her second husband, Harold A. Bombard, whom she married on May 15, 1986.

Survivors include her three children, Sister Jennifer Votraw of Ogdensburg, N.Y., Julian Votraw of Kansas City, Mo., and Jonathan L. Votraw of Plattsburgh; three grandchildren, Timothy and his wife, Kimberly Votraw of Brownstown, Mich., Lisa M. Votraw of Washington, D.C., and Jonathan L. Votraw Jr. of Randolph, N.J.; three great-grandchildren, Brittany L. Torner of Plattsburgh, Nikolas Riley Votraw and Sarah Elizabeth Votraw of Brownstown, Mich. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Also included is her dearest and lifelong friend, Peg Hoey of AuSable Forks, who has been her sister all these years.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the Zaumetzer-Sprague Funeral Home in AuSable Forks. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Church, AuSable Forks. Interment will be in Holy Name Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be offered to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 1425 Washington St., Watertown, NY 13601.
