KEENE - Charles "Chuck" Surhoff, 97, of Keene died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital in Elizabethtown.
He was born in Rochester, N.Y. on May 21, 1916 to Charles H. and Susie E. Surhoff.
Chuck moved to Keene in 1948 and bought and managed the cabins and gas station where the new Keene Fire House now stands. He sold the property in 1955 and worked as a master tool and die maker for 30 years in Plattsburgh and Lake Placid.
Chuck was very active in his community. He served several terms on the Keene Central School Board and was also a Trustee of the Keene Valley Congregational Church. One other source of pride and accomplishment was the establishment of the Keene Fire Department. He was one of the original charter members of the Department. With a borrowed truck from the Keene Valley Fire Department and some rakes and hoses, the Keene Fire Department was founded in 1952 due to the efforts of these men. It was a proud day for Chuck this past June to see the opening and dedication of the new Keene Fire Department and receive congratulations from the Town of Keene and Governor Cuomo.
Chuck was predeceased by his wife, Marge Surhoff; and his daughter, Cindy Surhoff Rand. He is survived by his stepchildren, Geri Robinson and her husband Gary of Spring Hill, Fla., Jacqueline Beatty and her husband Bob of East Meadow, N.Y., Maggie Sheldon and her husband Dan of Keene Valley, N.Y. and Edward Denning and his wife Elizabeth of East Meadow, N.Y. Chuck also had 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at the Keene Valley Congregational Church at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Keene Fire Department, P.O. Box 136, Keene, NY 12942.
