— WESTPORT - Jean J. DeGroff, 83, passed away peacefully August 26, 2013, at her home in Westport, under the care of Essex County Hospice. She was born Dec. 21, 1929, in Putnam, N.Y.

Jean is survived by her four children, Chris (Diana) DeGroff of Provo, Utah, Kurt (Annie) DeGroff of Provo, Ian (Helen) DeGroff of Westport, and Heide (Mike) DeGroff-Doyle of Lewis. She is also survived by many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, whom she admired and loved. She was pre- deceased by her husband of 46 years, Chester R. DeGroff.

Jean was an exceptional woman who loved to bake and cook for anyone and everyone. She was well-known for her famous apple pies and the seven layer cakes she made for just about anyone who asked. She was well-loved by everyone she encountered and was willing to help anyone at a moment's notice. She worked at Treadwell Estates and Bessboro Farm with her husband for 30 years as a housekeeper and a caregiver to the Treadwell children. Jean was very kind-hearted and light-spirited. She was a real people person who loved being around young people and was always ready to go on a quick shopping trip or do something fun with her grand- children.

In her later years, after she retired, she would be seen in her little silver sports car, making her daily loop from Westport to Lewis to Elizabethtown and home again to Westport, meeting and talking to everyone she would encounter and stopping to visit with those whom she knew daily.

Jean suffered a stroke in 2009 that ended her independence and her love of just taking off in her little silver sports car. But when she acquired the aid of some great caregivers, she was off shopping and to the movies and trying to run the wheels right off the car again. Jean impacted many people's lives in a positive way and she will be truly missed.

As to Jean's wishes, burial will be held privately and at the discretion of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jean's name to the SPCA in Westport.

Arrangements will be made through W.M. Marvin's Sons Inc. Funeral Home in Elizabethtown, NY. For online condolences, please visit us at www.wmmarvins.com
