---- — NEWARK — John Frederick Side Jr., 73, went to the open arms of his Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Canandaigua, N.Y.
Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 2, at Woodlane Community Church, 5694 Woodlane, Newark. A Masonic Service will be at 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 3, at the church. In Alexandria Bay, there will be a memorial service and a time of remembrance at 2 p.m August 10, at the American Legion, ending with a military honors tribute.

John was born May 29, 1940, in Alexandria Bay, the son of the late John F. and Catherine (Langlois) Side. He retired from Mobil Chemical in Macedon, N.Y., in 2002. The funeral home proudly flies the Navy Flag in honor of John's service to our country. He was a member and former deacon at the Woodlane Community Church (Arcadia Reformed). He was a former Scout Master of Troop 138 in Newark and a leader of Troop 65 in Alexandria Bay. Over the years, John received several awards, including the Daniel Carter Beard Award and Silver Beaver Award. He was also a past member of the Shriners and member of the Newark Masonic Lodge No. 83, where he served as a trustee and was past Master. He also served as Grand Master Staff and served as representative to Japan. John was a member of the American Legion in Alexandria Bay.
John will be remembered by his loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Deanna (Smith) Side; sons, Jonathan Side of Plattsburgh and Matthew Side of Albany; daughter, Suzanne Erway of Newark; grandchildren, Elizabeth Erway, Catherine Erway, Ethan Erway, Jonathan Side Jr. and Kyle Side; brother, George (Virginia) Side of Florida; half-brother, Larry (Carla) Side of Delaware; half-sister, Amy (Carl) Roberts of Alexandria Bay; uncle, Roger Peterson of Alexandria Bay; aunts, Betty Cunningham of Calcium, N.Y., and Elaine Side of Clayton, N.Y.; special sister-in-law, Jeanie Walters of Oriskany, N.Y.; brothers-in-law, George J. (Jean Ann) Smith of Rome, Lewis R. (Jewell) Smith of Florida, and John Diabo of Alexandria Bay; and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his brother, Douglas J. Side; and sister, Kay Diabo.
